"La Tempesta" by Giorgione da Castelfranco (a student of Bellini). As many of you know, this painting from the Venetian Renaissance figures prominently in the novel "A Soldier of the Great War." For an enlarged reproduction, go here.

"Madonna and Child with St. Catherine and St. Mary Magdalen" by Giovanni Bellini. The figure of Mary Magdalen is on the cover of the newest edition of the above-mentioned novel.
Anyone care to speculate on the correlation?

NOOOOO!!!! John (B) and I were going to make it!!! Maybe it will be indefinitely postponed....
Edward Norton???? What are they thinking??
I'm going to ask Mark Helprin himself what he thinks of this...they're going to butcher it.
Hey guys- I was on another web page about the alleged 'Soldier' movie, and it was supposed to have been made in 2000. So either it completely passed me by when it was released, or it was dropped or postponed. This web site and the one John posted are the only two that google brings up.
meanwhile, *fingers crossed*

Well as you said production was supposed to begin in 2000, so unless it's taking more than 6 years to make, something's happened to it.
But if that's the case wouldn't there be some sort of notice from Miramax about it being dropped? And why would it still be on hollywood.com as "in-production"?
curious....
Edward Norton...man...I wonder what involvment, if any, they had planned on Helprin having in the production.
Pax, John
They both have a madonna?
